These Companies Are Hiring Developers Without Whiteboard
As a developer, I have always rooted against whiteboard interviews.
Looks like the creator of Ruby on Rails agrees with me, too.
Where does the whiteboard stand:
Whiteboard interviews are stressful. But sadly, they are still an industry standard. Whiteboard interviews are dominant in 1st rung software companies: FAAMG (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and Google). And these companies are the magnets for talented developers across the world.
Not just that, they also inspire millions of developers to elevate themselves above average. Money is the greatest tool to breed talent.
Failing FAAMG, average developers are also satisfied with the 2nd rung software companies, such as Slack, Uber, Lyft, Snapchat, Reddit, Netflix, Twitch, Airbnb, Booking.com, and many more.
How most developers route through the whiteboard maze:
Many confident developers try to aim for their dream companies by going the organic way, which is to do LeetCode, Codechef, and HackerRank. They spend sleepless nights problem after problem.
Almost all of them read Cracking the Code Interview (I did too — it’s a necessary step to put you into a thinking hat to know if algorithmic jobs are really suitable for you).
Some enthusiastic devs also attend hefty coaching programs to prepare better for the ultimate algorithmic tests. The typical fee they charge is $150+ per hour.
In the end, however, the funnel is quite narrow. Whiteboard interviews wear down those who fail to execute their knowledge at the last moment, irrespective of how well prepared they are. The…
